Algeria had been under French colonial rule since the mid-19th century, experiencing significant resistance and struggle for independence throughout the 20th century. The Algerian War of Independence, which lasted from 1954 to 1962, was a pivotal period marked by fierce fighting and political negotiations. On July 5, 1962, Algeria finally gained its independence following the signing of the Évian Accords, which ended the war and granted Algeria sovereignty.
